Stress-Related Disorders

Stress can be healthy in small doses. People may experience improved performance, stamina and motivation. In more severe cases, stress has devastating side-effects. Excessive stress can contribute to heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and obesity, headaches, accelerated aging, dementia and premature death. How we respond to stress determines our health.

SPECIALTIES

Anxiety or Fear
Anxiety or fear originates from the negative response to a perceived mental or environmental threat. A fight or flight reaction can occur which helps a person avoid a dangerous situation. In some cases anxiety can be debilitating and has to be addressed in order for a person to function normally.

Depression
Depression is a serious clinical illness. Severe depression is associated with a sense of hopelessness, restlessness, diminished interests, insomnia and can lead to suicide. It is one of the most common stress-related disorders and frequently goes untreated.

Trauma/PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder occurs after a traumatic event(s), threatening a person’s safety / well-being. PTSD is most commonly found in soldiers and victims of rape, natural disaster, loss or kidnapping. The memories and associated emotions can impede one’s ability to live a normal life. Psychotherapy assists victims in coping with symptoms of PTSD.
